Recent Earthquakes in the Yellowstone Region

Yellowstone is a very geologically active area which is centered around the caldera of an ancient supervolcano. Because of this there are many earthquakes in the region. Most often these quakes are small but occasionally, such as with the 1959 Hebgen Lake earthquake which measured 7.3 on the Richter scale, very large and destructive quakes can rock the region. Quake Lake is a reminder of what such an earthquake can do. For more infomation about the Geology of Yellowstone visit the USGS Yellowstone Volcanic Observatory.
