The Amend Lab carries out research in microbial geochemistry with particular interests in shallow-sea hydrothermal systems, the deep subsurface biosphere, energetics of microbial metabolisms in extreme environments, novel microbial culturing techniques, the biogeochemistry of arsenic, the origin and early evolution of life, microbial processes under energy limiting conditions, thermodynamic properties of biomolecules at elevated temperatures, and astrobiology.
