A phylogenetically distinct line of
Archaea contains three thermophilic and extremely acidophilic prokaryotes,
Thermoplasma,
Ferroplasma, and
Picrophilus.
These organisms are among the most acidophilic of all known prokaryotes and, in the case of
Picrophilus, even capable of growth below pH 0.
